Atlas V is an active expendable launch system in the Atlas rocket family and is the newest member of the family. Compared to the Atlas III vehicle, there are numerous changes, compared to the Atlas II, it is a near-redesign - there was no Atlas IV.

The first Atlas V was launched on August 21, 2002, and since then has had more than two dozen launches, and has a near-perfect success rate. The near perfect mission occurred in June 2007 when the flight experienced an upper-stage anomaly when the engine in the vehicle's Centaur upper stage shut down early, leaving the payload—a pair of ocean surveillance satellites—in a lower than intended orbit. However, the customer categorized the mission as a success. In April 2008, Atlas V lifted its heaviest payload to date into orbit—a 14,625-pound telecommunications satellite.
